Beyonce Reportedly Lip-Synched “The Star-Spangled Banner” At President Obama’s Inauguration

It has been reported that Beyonce decided to use a pre-recorded backing for her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” yesterday morning at President Obama’s inauguration.

Millions of people tuned in yesterday to watch President Obama’s inauguration ceremony, which began with a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by superstar Beyonce. Her performance was praised by many people, blogs, and media outlets alike– however now it is reported that the singer was actually lip-synching.

This comes as a surprise as Beyonce is known for her strong and powerful voice, so why would she chose to lip-synch? The London Times reports that a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps Band confirmed that Bey’s was going in over a pre-recorded version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The spokeswoman said it is “standard procedure to record a backing track and Beyoncé decided rather shortly before her performance to rely on the studio version rather than singing it live on the Capitol.”

This isn’t all that uncommon, at Obama’s first inauguration ceremony in 2009 Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and colleagues performed with a backing track, however this was because of cold and windy weather.

Although it has been rumored that the Marine Corps Band was also pretending to play their instruments, a representative for the Marine Corps Band told the Washingtonian that they were indeed performing live, even though Beyonce decided not to sing. “We don’t know why Beyonce decided to use prerecorded music,” the rep said. “All music [for inaugural ceremonies] is prerecorded as a matter of course, and that’s something we’ve done for years and years. The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony but we received last-minute word that Beyonce wanted to use the recording.”

The Fashion

In the morning, Lady Obama arrived at the steps of the Capital wearing a navy blue checked coat by Thom Browne, a bejeweled J.Crew belt and patent pumps, with a bangin’ new haircut and her daughters following behind also notably wearing J.Crew and Kate Spade coats. In a matter of minutes, the J.Crew belt had sold out online with explosive needs for her daughters’ outfits as well (which were all purchased off-the-rack)!

Four years ago, the vibrant Mrs. Obama had chosen a delightful white gown, created by young American fashion designer, Jason Wu, who rose to fame after the Ball.

And here we thought maybe, just maybe, she might go WOO! (Wu) again! Annnd last night, our lovely First Lady made her fashionable appearance in a ruby red custom made halter gown with velvet accents by Jason Wu during the Inauguration Ball!

The Performers

Beyonce performed a flawless rendition of our National Anthem, Alicia Keys sang her own cover of “Girl on Fire” with the lyrics changed to “Obama’s on Fire,” and Jennifer Hudson sang an Al Green cover as the couple danced on stage. Who Will Michelle Obama Wear on Inauguration Day?

Inauguration Day is fast approaching and we fashion people anticipate the ever so tasteful First Lady’s gown for the Inauguration Ball. Here’s our TOP 5 picks for the lovely Michelle Obama!

Marchesa Resort 2013
This form fitting nude Marchesa gown is covered in sparkling sequins and embellished in hand sewn pearly beads. The silhouette of this evening dress accentuates the body and would best highlight those curves!
Zac Posen Resort 2013
This sexy, yet appropriate dress from Zac Posen’s recent Resort collection is a trendy pick for our list. As emerald green has been dubbed the color of the year, this dark toned ball gown is draped with fine silk and flows in thousands of delicate layers of tulle. The neckline is elegant yet sexy in the most appropriate way as we suggest that our lovely First Lady add some diamonds for that extra bling to accentuate her long neck.
Monique Lhiuiller Fall 2013
This gray sequin gown from wedding dress designer, Monique Lhiuiller is a perfect conservative yet stylish take on a fun, simple gray tulle gown that will sparkle bright as the Obamas waltz around for the first dance!
Naeem Khan Pre-Fall 2013
Rumor has it that a Naeem Khan piece is one of the top contenders for the Inauguration gown this year. This luscious red lace gown from Khan’s Pre-Fall line is risque and not at all conservative, which we thought was suitable for Mrs. Obama, as she is often times very bold with her fashion choices. And this one is a glamourous one that will capture the lenses of all the cameras at the ceremony!
Jason Wu Resort 2013
In the 2009 Inauguration Ball, Michelle Obama dawned in a dress designed by then young up and coming designer, Jason Wu. At the time, the symbolism of the First Lady’s choice of a young American designer was refreshing and she has since been dubbed a fashion icon and a supporter of American designers. Even after the Inauguration, Obama has been seen in Wu’s designs on several other occasions and events.

All eyes will be on our First Lady who’s sometimes risque and often times strays from conservative styles. Will she dawn in Jason Wu once again or will she surprise us all with a sultry sheer dress? Find out Monday at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama’s second term of presidency!
